Background on CHFS
Cloven Heart Farm Sanctuary was established in 2018. The founders took residence in China Spring, Texas in the summer of 2016. Rescued their first farmed animals in May of 2017, two sheep Ava and Noah. Cloven Heart was registered in 2018 and granted 501c3 nonprofit status in February 2020.
Who do we need on Board
Ultimately, the ideal board member for Cloven Heart Farm Sanctuary nonprofit would possess a combination of the skills listed below and be dedicated to advancing the organization's mission and values. We are seeking to establish a diverse board with complementary skills that can provide well-rounded guidance and support to the sanctuary's operations and growth. You do not need to possess all of these experiences and skills in order to apply.
All board members will be required to commit to a minimum term of 3 years in order to see the value of our collaboration, expertise, and efforts realized. Board status can be renewed upon request with approval of current board.
Meeting Attendance:
Board members will have an onboarding requirement of weekly online meetings for a period of one month. Meetings will then be held quarterly with a yearly in-person meeting (if possible) at the sanctuary. (Board applicants do not have to live in Texas)
Timely Communication:
Group texts and group emails offer a quick and efficient way to communicate, allowing us to address urgent matters, share updates, and respond promptly to emerging opportunities or challenges related to our nonprofit's mission. This ensures that important information doesn't get delayed, helping us make well-informed decisions in a timely manner. Email and text communication allow all board members, regardless of their location, to participate in discussions and decision-making processes. This inclusivity fosters a sense of unity and ensures that diverse perspectives are considered, ultimately leading to more well-rounded and effective strategies for advancing Cloven Heart's mission.

- Passion for Animal Welfare: A strong commitment to Cloven Heart's mission and a genuine passion for animal welfare are fundamental. A strong understanding and acceptance of vegan living and how that interconnects us and aligns us ethically with farmed animal rescue. It will always be about the animals and for the animals.
- Conflict Resolution and Communication: Strong communication skills and the ability to resolve conflicts diplomatically are important for a harmonious board dynamic. The right candidate is all about furthering the mission and growing the sanctuary and not about being the most right or having the most power.
- Diversity and Inclusion: A commitment to diversity and inclusion on the board and within the organization can help represent a wide range of perspectives and backgrounds. We seek to support an environment that is accepting and inclusive of all orientations of people.
- Nonprofit Governance Experience: Experience serving on or working with nonprofit boards, understanding nonprofit governance, and compliance with legal and ethical standards is crucial, but not necessary to have in order to apply.
- Fundraising and Development: Board members with expertise in fundraising, donor relations, major gifts, corporate sponsorship acquisition, grant writing, event hosting, and development can help secure the necessary financial resources to support the sanctuary's operations and growth.
- Financial Management: Knowledge of financial management, bookkeeping, budgeting, and accounting is valuable to ensure the organization's financial sustainability.
- Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Understanding of nonprofit law, tax regulations, and compliance matters is essential to keep the organization in good standing.
